Before the model, there was the mark.

Alefba reads the history of intelligence as a history of commitments leaving the mind, entering a medium, and becoming available to another interpreter.

THE PROPOSITION
The model era did not create the problem of translation. It made the cost of silent translation failure visible at machine speed.

The first interface was a mark

A mark turns private perception into a shareable object. Its power is not permanence alone, but the possibility of interpretation beyond the original moment.

Cave marks, tokens, alphabets, ledgers, diagrams, and programs differ radically, yet each establishes a contract between an absent author and a future reader.

The Alefba symbol draws on this long arc: three deliberately imperfect elements form a coherent whole. The reference is philosophical and visual, not a claim that one ancient sign can be assigned a single modern meaning.

Every medium compiles

Writing does not move meaning intact. It selects, orders, compresses, and excludes. A legal form, a database row, and a prompt all perform this operation differently.

Intermediate representations became explicit in computing because machines require structure. Compilers separate source meaning from target instruction sets so the same program can travel across hardware.

Alefba applies that architectural lesson to model context: preserve a canonical, typed representation before producing provider-specific renderings.

  • Source and target remain distinguishable.
  • Omissions are recorded rather than hidden.
  • A rendering can be replaced without redefining canonical meaning.

The model-era break

Prompts collapse policy, goals, evidence, preferences, and output rules into one fragile stream of text.

When that stream is shortened, translated, retrieved, or adapted for another model, critical commitments may disappear without a visible failure signal.

The central Alefba question is therefore operational: which commitments were represented, which were omitted, where did they come from, and what remains unknown after rendering?

01.4

An open international program

Danial Samiei founded Alefba as an open development program for model-independent semantic infrastructure.

Its social premise is that access to machine intelligence should not require surrendering every context, language, and rule to one model family or one legal jurisdiction.

Its engineering premise is narrower and testable: represent commitments canonically, render them explicitly, verify bounded properties, and publish evidence without converting unknowns into promises.
